Stop #5: The Peg

Day 11: Jeff and Uncle Ronnie left at 9:45am to meet up with the other six dudes for their golf game in Teulon. Like most of the summer so far in Winni, it was cold and windy all day. Made for high scores. Oh well. At least we had good company!

The girls enjoyed a leisurely morning before preparing for the big dinner. The "after golf/Welcome to Winni/Happy 2nd Anniversary Ash & Jeff and Stacey & Kent" dinner guests included: AG & UR , Flo, Irene, Wade, Susan, Steven, Jorel, Andrew, Blair, Adrea, Sacha, Genevieve, Kassin, Gavin, Maureen, Stacey and Kent. It was great for Ash to finally meet almost everyone that she had heard so much about and for Jeff to catch up.

Day 12: AG & UR took us on a tour of The Forks. On our way there, we passed the old Eaton's building, where Flo had her first job in the mailroom. We saw some cute shops, a neat museum, ate at The Original Pancake House, walked through a park with some native art, saw where the flood line reached in the 1800s and in 1997 (very high!), went up to the lookout tower to see where Assiniboine River meets Red River (hence the name Forks) and watched the unprotected (she means no helmets) skateboarders and BMX riders. We took a lovely scenic drive back and saw the immense houses that line Assiniboine Park .

Jeff's cousin Stacey and her husband Kent kindly invited us over for dinner. They have a very cute house in St. Norbert (south end of town). Once again we were spoiled with tasty appetizers and a delicious dinner (Mom taught Stacey well! Kent cooks a mean steak and makes lovely toasts too "to long, lost cousins..."). A great night with "awesome" conversation.

Day 13: AG & UR took us on a tour of Gimli - the New Iceland! Ronnie says Gimli has the second highest Icelandic population... after Iceland! Lots of thoughts about my Afi (Grandpa!). We stopped for a delicious lunch at Amma's (Grandma's). We got a taste of the history in a museum, walked along the water to see the murals and finally found the Viking statue before heading home.

Only a few minutes to freshen up and head over to Jeff's Aunt Maureen and Uncle Gavin's for dinner. We played tournaments of "Balls in a Knot" (I think it should be called "Dingaling" after that Chuck Berry tune). It is two golf balls attached to a foot of string and you throw it at a 3-rung fence and you get different points depending on which rung it wraps itself to. Simple concept, difficult to master, but tons of fun. Jeff was a star and Ash did improve to meteor status. G & M had a delicious rib dinner prepared for us (can't say enough about the meals on the Long Way Across menu... fantabulous!) and fun to meet and catch up with more relatives.

Day 14:
Jeff got up super early to golf with Kent at Kingswood in La Salle in the south end of Winnipeg. We played with Kent's buddy, Chris and Chris' buddy, Russ. Chris managed to win most of the skins. Jeff managed to struggle with his driver, but at least this round we were blessed with nothing but sunshine. Couldn't have asked for a better golf day. Thanks for the invite, Kent.

While the men golfed, the ladies shopped! Stacey met Auntie Grace, Flo and me at DeNardi Plaza where we enjoyed fresh cinnamon buns and coffee. After that, we sauntered down to "Daddy's Girl", a lovely jewellery store. Since Jeff was allowed a golf game, I was allowed to purchase a trinket for myself! Auntie Florence treated Stacey to the same gorgeous butterfly/dragonfly necklace and earring set that I bought, so we will be long-distance twins! (Flo also treated me to an early birthday present: a Dior-inspired red purse! It's one-of-a-kind, so look out, Kelowna!)

That evening we had a quiet dinner at Grace and Ron's. We laughed a lot talking about the old days and the crazy things we used to do. Cousin Wade and his wife, Susan swung by late to say goodbye as well. Just a nice relaxing evening in the gazebo for the following day we will be on the road again.

P.S. Rob and Jennie, we may just have to turn back since Kelowna may be burnt down by the time we get there!!!!

Day 15: We arose kinda early but since our next leg was only four hours away, we had time for a pancake breakfast. (What am I saying??? There is always time for a pancake breakfast!!!!) We slowly packed our things and got our hugs in with Mom, AG and UR. Very sad to leave as it never seems like enough time when we visit. Thanks for everything to the best Aunt and Uncle anyone could ask for. xoxo a&j
