TOC Job Count: Two Half-Days

My first TOC call came on Monday night for a morning-only gig at Peter Greer! I accepted right away since I know where the school is, the classroom, the bathroom... all that good stuff. To make it even more attractive, there was a Student Teacher AND a full-time CEA in that room. I was an excellent supervisor for all 2.5 hours!

My second call came last night for a gig at Glenmore Elementary - where I went to school from Kindergarten to Grade 7! It was an afternoon only in a French Immersion, Grade 4 classroom. I was so excited!
When the kids came in from recess, I told them that I had gone to this school and got a pretty surprised reaction. (Whoa! The school is that old??? Well, that's what I imagined they were thinking. That's what I was thinking!)

I decided that my "gimmic" as a TOC would be to play the game "Two Truths and a Lie" (thank you Tribes!). I write three sentences on the board: two are true and one is false. It's up to the kids to ask questions to figure out which one is the lie. Then we vote and I reveal. Very exciting stuff. I used it on Day 1 in Grade 7 and it was a hit.

I use two standard sentences, one of which is the lie:
1. I have four sisters.
2. My brother-in-law is a stand-up comedian.

And my third is usually something currently happening in my life, in this case:
3. I'm going to the Olympics tomorrow.

They usually ask me to name my sisters (which I easily roll off: Shilo, Courtnay, Robyn and Tess) and this time I had to explain what a stand-up comedian is. I gave them some time to chat amongst themselves (they already had a topic and I wasn't feeling veclemt) and overheard someone say: "Well if she was going to the Olympics, she would have had to leave already, so that can't be true..." We voted which one was the lie and, as usual, #2 had the most votes. (I need to get something to prove that it's true. Maybe a poster advertising his show or something? I'll figure it out.)

Anyways, I enjoy this game because it's good practice of oral French, asking questions and they get to find out a little bit about me. I hope this gimmick will work in my TOC career!

Although it was for such a short time, it was really neat to be back at my old stomping grounds. As I walked through the hall, I think I saw one teacher that taught there during my time (although she never taught me). Yikes.

Maybe I'll get a call back to Glenmore! I'll have to figure out another game if it's the same class though!
